Advancis reflects on the successful completion of the SPELL research project and positive outcomes

AI-supported crisis management – first implementations expected to start in 2025

January 21, 2025 – After a three-year project period, the SPELL research project (semantic platform for intelligent decision and operations support in control and situation centers) will be put into practice in 2025. As one of the central project partners, Advancis Software & Services GmbH played a key role in the development and implementation of the project objectives. Advancis’ focus was on the integration, harmonization and utilization of sensor data from security, building management, communication and information technology in near real time.

The SPELL project, which was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, aimed to use artificial intelligence (AI) and modern data technologies to improve responsiveness and efficiency in crisis situations. Especially in emergencies such as natural disasters or blackouts, this enables a decisive gain in information and time when dealing with the situation. Advancis specifically tested the developed solutions in integrated BOS (authorities and organizations with security tasks) and industrial control centers to ensure resource-efficient and highly available event management through AI. David Teppe, Head of Strategic Alliances at Advancis, emphasizes: “SPELL has shown how the intelligent use of AI can be used to analyze large amounts of data in real time and make it usable for decision-making. We contributed our extensive expertise in the field of security and building management solutions to the project. Our core expertise lies in the development of our WinGuard open integration platform with its interfaces to third-party systems, which provides vendor-neutral security, building and energy management, communication, IT, AI, robotics and IoT systems via a standardized framework (AOP) for different front and back-end applications.”

One highlight of the research project was the successful integration of various data sources – from emergency calls to sensor technology and weather data – to create a comprehensive picture of the situation. The WinGuard platform from Advancis played a key role in this. WinGuard enables the central integration and visualization of information from a wide variety of systems and data sources. The SPELL platform can then be used to implement AI applications that can provide valuable additional decision support to emergency services based on all available sensor data. Lars Waldow, Chief Product Officer at Advancis, comments: “As part of the SPELL project, we were able to significantly improve the connection to WinGuard by third parties. Through a single integration between SPELL and WinGuard, the immediate usability of the more than 500 existing WinGuard interfaces by external AI services was successfully demonstrated in live prototypes. SPELL has impressively demonstrated the enormous potential of AI in security and crisis management. The solutions developed are an important step towards supporting modern control centers even better in the future and thus protecting human lives.”

Advancis wants to thank all project partners and the funding body for their excellent cooperation. With the successful completion of the SPELL research project, the knowledge gained, and the comprehensive application potential are now available to companies as well as private and public organizations. “We cordially invite commercial enterprises, industrial parks, fire departments, public administrations, cities and municipalities as well as operators of critical infrastructures to get in touch with us,” emphasizes David Teppe. “Together, we can tailor the possibilities and benefits of a SPELL implementation to their specific requirements and protection mandates and, ideally, put them directly into practice.”
